YACHT COST OF OWNERSHIP
What does a yacht actually cost to run?
Industry benchmarks put annual running costs at 10–15% of a yacht's purchase value — but the spread between a light-use 80-footer and a charter-active 150-footer is enormous. Pick how detailed you want to be.

How the calculator works
Every operating cost rolls up to one rule: 10 to 15 percent of a yacht's purchase value per year. Sub-50-foot vessels sit at the lower end of that band. 100-foot and larger yachts sit at the upper end. Mediterranean operation adds about 30% over a US East Coast baseline. Caribbean adds 10%. Northern Europe and the Middle East fall in between.
Inside that headline number, nine categories share the load. Crew is the single largest line on any vessel over 100 feet — typically 30 to 45% of total operating cost. Maintenance and refit reserves run 15 to 25%. Fuel is highly variable (8 to 15%) and dominated by engine hours and cruising pattern. Dockage runs 5 to 15%, with the Mediterranean substantially higher than US baseline. Insurance is 1 to 2% of insured hull value, which lands somewhere between 3 and 8% of the operating budget. Management and admin fees run 3 to 7%. Compliance, safety, and class — surveys, life rafts, suppression cylinders, certificates — runs 2 to 5%. Provisioning and guest costs add 3 to 8% depending on use. Communications and miscellaneous round out the bottom at 1 to 3%.
The smallest dollar line is also the most under-discussed: compliance and safety. It's where surprises hide — missed renewals, expired certificates, hydrostatic tests that lapse the week before survey. The category is small in dollars and large in downside.
